SLSQ has significantly changed its radio network over the last four years, working strategically in its approach to reach the goal of having a state-of-the-art digital radio network for its services. The process started with narrowbanding the current analog system for the start of the 2010/2011 patrolling season, and in the 2014/2015 patrolling season, it converted 37 clubs and 45 lifeguard services to a digital radio network. This included handheld radios, the upgrade of repeater sites and SLSQ Communication Centres. SLSQ gradually introduced the new digital radio network to 30,000+ volunteer lifesavers and 500+ lifeguards across the state. Currently SLSQ operates at 73 lifeguard locations and 59 clubs located across Queensland; this covers almost 2000 km of coastline from Port Douglas in the North to Rainbow Bay in the South. SLSQ operates two communications centres in South East Queensland, which look after the clubs and lifeguard services all year round. Early next patrolling season, SLSQ aims to have all clubs and lifeguards commutating into the South East Communications Centres.
