Lightning discharges are wellknown to give rise to significant equipment and downtime losses at telecommunication sites. This situation is especially true in parts of the world with higher lightning activity, but also in regions with less lightning where tall towers are installed or the installation is in an elevated location like a mountain top. The three key parts of an effective lightning mitigation scheme for a telecommunication facility are direct-strike protection, earthing and bonding, and surge and transient protection.
In this presentation, attendees will be taken through the key steps required to ensure their telecommunications facility can withstand the deleterious effects of direct and indirect lightning flashes.
Topics covered will include:
- lightning risk assessment,
- a simplified 4-step approach to protecting the site and examples of its application and success,
- relevant codes and Standards,
- the latest methodologies included in Standards and personnel safety issues.
